We just completed our week of tapping. What is Tapping? Mortar Board has a tradition of "tapping" new members to let them know they have been selected to join mortar board. A current member finds one of the inductee's in a scheduled class, and proudly announces their acceptance into our society. Here's some of the surprised faces from Organic Chemistry 2 last week:

Mortar Board prides itself on promoting and enhancing literary efforts in those communities that receive less than ideal literacy support.

Mortar Board members have been busy with fundraising efforts.

September 19, 2011. Members set up table in the Quad selling snow cones to raise money.

Throughout the month of October til November 15th members will raise funds for the First Book Virtual Book Drive. Members have advertised the fundraiser all over campus and throughout the community to allow donations online.

The money that Mortar Board raises will buy books for low-income children in Kansas City. It is a worthy cause that directly benefits KC children.

Visit http://www.firstbook.org for more information.

Mortar Board is also raising funds by teaming up with California Pizza Kitchen on the Plaza.

On November 1, 2011 CPK is giving part of its profits for the entire business day to the Mortar Board honor society.
The textbooks we collected not only helped with our fundraising and campus-greening efforts, but they also generated funding for literacy initiatives across the globe. We were so excited to get our UMKC community involved in this project and had such a great time! Our project donated books for Africa. UMKC MBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02091473448057009592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8044160036048778453.post-73406437822481373172011-01-24T09:43:00.000-08:002011-01-31T19:16:24.192-08:00Graduation Flower SalesGraduation can be a busy time for everyone so what better way to help out those busy family members than to have flowers ready for purchase as they walk in to see their graduate walk across the stage? Each semester, UMKC Mortar Board sets up a table outside of our Sweeney Rec Center to sell beautiful roses for graduation. There are many different colors to chose from, as you can see in the picture below. We have found this event to be very successful for our chapter. We do benefit from some of the proceeds, and this past sale, December 17th, we had a very successful outcome! Everyone in our chapter participates in selling the flowers and some point during the weekend of graduations. UMKC MBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02091473448057009592noreply@blogger.com0
